WHAT IS FLIGHT FROM AN OFFICER IN LOUISIANA?

A person commits flight from an officer when he/she drives a motor vehicle or operates a watercraft and intentionally refuses to bring a vehicle or watercraft to a stop knowing that they have been given a visual and audible signal to stop by a police officer when the officer has reasonable grounds to believe that the driver has committed an offense. The signal shall be given by an emergency light and a siren on a vehicle marked as a police vehicle or marked police watercraft.

PENALTIES FOR FLIGHT FROM AN OFFICER CONVICTION

A person who commits the crime of flight from an officer may be fined not less than $150.00, nor more than $500.00, or imprisoned for not more than six months, or both.

The court may order restitution as a part of the sentence. If a person is ordered to make restitution and is found to be indigent and unable to make restitution in full at the time of conviction, the court shall order a periodic payment plan consistent with the person's financial ability.
